Sustainability at the Kaslo Hotel

At the Kaslo Hotel, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices throughout our operations. Nestled in the heart of the Kootenays, we recognize our responsibility to protect the natural beauty that surrounds us! That’s why sustainability isn’t just a value—it’s part of our everyday decision-making.We currently hold a ‘Green’ certification with BC Green Business which is the highest level certificate you can obtain.
What We're Doing to Reduce Our Environmental Footprint:
- Geothermal Heating and Cooling: Our entire building is powered by a geothermal system, significantly reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and lowering our greenhouse gas emissions year-round.
- Recycling and Waste Reduction: We actively recycle materials throughout the hotel and restaurant, and recently partnered with Better Table Academy to launch a food waste reduction program. Through this initiative, we’ve measured our food waste and are now implementing practices to minimize the same through reducing spoilage, over production and trimming waste, plate waste and staff meal waste.
- Energy Monitoring and Efficiency: Thanks to a BC Tourism Sustainability Network (TSN) Mico-Grant, we are going to install an energy meter in the hotel to track usage and identify opportunities to become more energy-efficient.
- Paperless Goals: We are continually working to reduce paper use across departments, moving toward more digital processes for administration, accounting, guest billing, and communication.
- Paper Products: All of our paper products used within the restaurant are between 80-100% recyclable. We are working towards all products being 100% recyclable.
- Local, Ethical and Sustainable Food Choices: Our Executive Chef works tirelessly to source and use local, ethical and sustainable food choices in the Waypoint Restaurant whenever possible.
Our goal is to make your stay comfortable while preserving the environment we all love. We’re proud to take steps—both big and small—toward a more sustainable future, and we’re just getting started. Please reach out if you have any comments or suggestions on how we can improve our sustainability practices!
