Activities
Biking and Trail Running (Summer)
Friendly Giant, Buckshot and High Commander - these are our newest trails in the area and oh boy are they fun! Friendly Giant is an 18 km (1 way) multidirectional trail on Buchanan which will
take you to the top of the mountain. If you choose to ascent the entirety, you are looking at 36k round trip. You can shorten the ascent or your descent by choosing to ride or run down Buckshot and High
Commander which are more fall line - both of which are more advanced than Friendly Giant so be aware of your riding ability when choosing these trails as well asavoiding listening to any music as folks may be descending behind you - be trailaware!
The River Trail - options to make this walk shorter or longer depending on how far you’d like to go. You can make this into a 5k loop and a 10-11k loop. This trail is a more family friendly option in town, with some stairs in sections where you would want to hold your child's hand
True Blue trail network - Strawberry Ridge, Spanish Moss, Sleepy Hollow and for the more adventurous bikers if you ascend the entirety of Bjerkness FSR you will reach
‘Chainsmoker’ one of the few black trails in the area that descends to the top of “I’ll Call Rusty” and down to the river trail, or the option to go right down ‘Look Waaay up!” and back to the Kaslo airport

Hiking & Running (Summer):
Lyle Lakes - 8.7 km return, 773m elevation gain, estimated time 4 hours - a higher
clearance vehicle is recommended to access the trailhead up Rossiter Creek FSR and
it will take you approximately 45 minutes to an hour to get there from Kaslo. The route follows Lyle
Creek Trail along Lyle Creek up to three beautiful lakes. The hike is not too technical
and moderately challenging. You are in relatively remote terrain so ensure you bring
the 10 essentials and let someone you trust know where you are going. If the weather
conditions allow, Mount Brennan can be summited following a trail from Lyle Lakes,
this will add numerous hours to your hike so ensure you leave enough time. Snow
can fall up high in October so keep that in mind and save the summit for Summer if
that’s the case!
Whitewater Canyon - 12.8km return to Whitewater Pass and 14.4k return to
Whitewater tarn, 670 elevation gain to Whitewater Pass and 830m elevation gain to
Whitewater tarn - again a reminder for the 10 essentials and lett someone know
where you are going. You traverse above the canyon and at the right time you may
see grizzly bears munching on berries in the valley below. Approximately 30 minutes
from Kaslo to the trailhead.
Davis Creek trail to Fishhook Lake - 8.8 km round trip, 700m of elevation gain,
estimated time 3 hours - you can choose to stop at the view point bench, or carry on
to check out the old growth cedars on your way to Fishhook lake, or carry on all the
way to Fishhook lake
Wakefield Trail/Idaho Peak - 20.8km out and back, 1,529 m elevation gain, estimated
time 7-9 hours
The trailhead is near Silverton, which will take you approximately 1.5 hours to reach from Kaslo
depending on where you park. You can park at the bottom of the 4x4 road or you
can drive up to the trailhead if you have higher clearance don’t mind a few ‘Kootenay
pinstripes’ on your vehicle (depending on the condition of the brush).
This hike is more difficult due to the elevation gain, but if you’re up for the challenge
the views are unrivaled! You will find interesting mining relics along the way!
These are just a few hikes! Ask our staff about more options.
